I've had a cynical streak recently with regards to cutesy sayings/stories along the lines of "Live each day as if it were your last" and "treat everyone like you were never going to see them again" and "live like you were dying".
I know the point of these cutesy sayings/stories is to make us slow down, cherish our relationships, and accomplish our goals. But in reality it really doesn't do any of that. Let's be honest. When we hear these things it mostly just makes us feel guilty. It just reminds us of things that we feel like we should be somehow doing, but since we really don't understand/want to do those things, we just feel guilty until mercifully we forget about the story.
And what we would do if we only had a short time to live would be really bad ideas for us, who in reality plan to keep living. For example, if the doctor told me today that I have exactly one year to live, I would do the following:
1. Liquify all my assets.
2. Quit my job.
3. Buy a beamer.
4. Give up trying to get a girlfriend.
5. Take my friends to Tucanos once a week.
6. Take an extended vacation to the Caymans with my family.
7. Eat a lot of pie/ice cream/junk food/etc etc etc.
8. Etc with the riotous living.
So, if I'm really going to live like I'm dying, I am now effectively broke, jobless, fat, and lazy, and I have no girlfriend and no prospects.
So thank you, cutesy 'live like you were dying' story.

You are hilarious my friend!
Yep, yep, yep.
perfectly said! Darr, you're hilar!
THANK YOU!!! I also detest hearing it when people say "appreciate what you have." All I end up doing is feeling guilty and that's a waste of time. When I bring this point up people don't seem to comprehend the point.
darr, this is really funny. maybe you could live like you were dying for a while so we can go on a great vacation. that could be fun...
