Google Earth, here I come

Some of you know that I have a minor obsession with Google Earth. It started about 2 years ago. Since then I probably spend about 2 hours a week or more looking at different parts of the globe. I love looking at the pictures, the landscape, the cities, everything. I then read the Wikipedia articles about random places to learn more about them.

But about a year ago, a new Google Earth obsession started.

There is a feature in G.E. that is like pictures on steroids. It is called "360 cities". The idea of 360 cities is very simple. Instead of just looking at a normal picture of something, you actually fly into a viewer that will show you everything around where that person was standing. So the person will take a boatload of pictures of everything around him, stitch them together, and you can look around in 360 degrees and see everything that he saw. It is awesome!

Well, I would like to announce that as of yesterday, I am now an official Google Earth 360 cities contributer. I finally got my pictures onto Google Earth! I had to sign up with 360 cities, buy some expensive stitching software, meticulously discover how to take good panoramics, publish them in 360 cities, and then wait for months to have them reviewed for Google Earth by a panel. And this week they passed the panel, and now the show up on Google Earth. I'm super excited about it.

So, if you are interested in seeing them (slash, seeing my name show up in Google Earth), open G.E. and enable 360 cities. This is done by going to the "Layers" window, maximizing the "Gallery" menu, and enabling "360cities". Then, type in Provo, Utah into the search bar. When you get to Provo, look for a red button-thingy up by the where the temple is that says "360" on it. Then click on it, and then click on the image that pops up. You should fly into the image and be able to look around. Woot woot!

For more viewing pleasure, right after you click on the red "360", click on my name. It will take you to a page that will show you all of the panoramic pictures I have done. Right on!

So, this is actually really cool. I downloaded it and looked at the rest of your panoramic pictures. Very sweet. I think I would like to see how you do this sometime.

Umm...I kind of feel like I know a rock star now. Maybe you could sign a picture and send it to me? Yep, good idea.
